I would certainly put the former groups mentioned in this category but not the others. I think "southern rock" was/is music that blends southern instrumental themes and sounds with chord-heavy 70s rock music. Lyrically, southern rock does and does not include themes that are part of the southern historical and cultural landscape. It seems to me that much of contemporary country music is nothing but southern rock warmed up a bit. I wouldn't call the Eagles a southern rock band at all. There's my two-cents worth.
